When to Trim Your Hedges in Wellington

A good hedge gives you privacy, shelter from the wind and a tidy edge to your property. Trim it at the wrong time, though, and you can end up with bare patches, scorched leaves or a hedge that’s constantly out of control.

Here’s a simple guide to when to trim hedges in Wellington, and how to keep them looking their best.

The Short Answer

Most hedges in the Wellington region do well with:

  • A main trim in late spring to early summer, roughly November to December
  • A lighter tidy in late summer to early autumn, roughly February to March

Fast-growing hedges may need a third trim in the middle of summer. Slow growers may only need one cut a year.

Spring (September to November)

Hedges put on a flush of soft new growth as the weather warms. It’s best to let that first flush firm up a little before cutting, so late spring is usually better than early spring.

Before trimming, check for nesting birds. Many birds nest in dense hedges through spring, and it’s worth waiting a few weeks if you find an active nest.

Summer (December to February)

Early summer is the ideal time for the main shaping trim on most hedges. Growth has slowed, the hedge responds well, and you’ll get a neat finish that lasts.

Avoid heavy trimming during long hot, dry spells. Freshly exposed leaves can scorch, particularly on hedges in full sun or exposed to the wind.

Autumn (March to May)

A light tidy in late summer or early autumn keeps the hedge neat through winter. Try to finish trimming by around April.

Cutting late in autumn encourages soft new growth that can be damaged by cold, wind and salt spray over winter.

Winter (June to August)

Winter is generally a quiet time for hedges. It can be a good time for hard renovation of some deciduous hedges, but most evergreen hedges are better renovated in spring when they’re ready to regrow.

It’s also a good time to plan. If your hedge has become too tall or too wide, talk to an arborist about staging a reduction over one or two seasons.

Common Wellington Hedge Plants

Different plants have different needs. As a general guide:

  • Griselinia (kāpuka): tough and wind tolerant. Trim twice a year.
  • Pittosporum: dense and fast-growing. Trim two or three times a year to keep it tight.
  • Corokia: slower growing and hardy in coastal spots. Usually one or two trims a year.
  • Buxus (box): light trims twice a year. Trim in dry weather and clean your tools to help avoid box blight.
  • Photinia ‘Red Robin’: two or three trims a year encourage the red new growth.
  • Leyland cypress and other conifers: trim regularly, and never cut back into old brown wood, as most conifers won’t regrow from it.

Shaping Hedges for the Wind

Wellington’s wind is hard on hedges. A few simple shaping habits help a lot:

  • Keep the base wider than the top. A slight taper lets light reach the lower branches and helps wind flow over the hedge rather than pushing against it.
  • Keep the top rounded or level. Flat, wide tops can collect wind and snap under load.
  • Trim little and often. Regular light cuts keep a hedge dense. Dense hedges filter wind far better than gappy ones.

Signs Your Hedge Needs Attention

  • Bare, woody patches at the base
  • Growth that’s too tall to reach safely from the ground
  • Branches spreading over footpaths, driveways or neighbouring properties
  • Thin, patchy growth or browning sections
  • Blocked sightlines at driveway entrances

Most councils in the region expect hedges to be kept clear of footpaths and not to block visibility for drivers, so keeping boundary hedges in check is worth doing.

DIY or Professional?

Low garden hedges are an easy weekend job with a good pair of trimmers. Tall or wide hedges are a different story. Working off ladders with powered trimmers is a common cause of injuries, and the volume of clippings from a large hedge can be significant.

Our team trims hedges of all sizes for homes, businesses and lifestyle blocks, and takes the green waste away. If you’d rather not think about it at all, we can add hedge trimming to an ongoing maintenance plan so it’s done at the right time every year.
