Do I Need Council Consent to Remove a Tree in Wellington?

When Is Council Consent Required?
Not all trees need consent to be removed. However, you’ll likely need permission if the tree:
- Is listed as a protected or notable tree
- Is on public land or near a boundary
- Is within a Significant Natural Area (SNA)
- Is over a certain size or height
- Is covered by a covenant or development condition
Each council has its own rules, so it’s best to check with your local authority.
Wellington Region Tree Rules
Here’s a general guide, but always confirm with the relevant council:
Wellington City Council
- Notable trees are protected under the District Plan
- Consent is often required for removal, pruning over 20 per cent, or work near the root zone

- Rules apply to protected trees or those within sensitive ecological zones

What About Emergency or Hazard Trees?

- Take photos for evidence
